Credits & Course Selection

Starting in 2011 the University of Cape Town will be using the National Qualification Framework (NQF) system.  NQF credits illustrate the amount of time both in and out of class that a student will need to dedicate to the course for the semester.  The most frequent divisions seen for NQF credits are 18, 24 & 36.

When choosing courses, students need to make sure their total NQF credits add up to at least 72 NQF and no more than 90 NQF.  The NQF credit number is located directly under the course titles in the department course handbooks.

Academic Calendar

The South African academic year starts in February and ends in November. Interstudy students spending the North American Fall semester in South Africa will actually be entering the second semester of the South African system after the South African mid-year (July/winter) break.

Chosing Courses

  • If you're studying in the North American Fall, make sure there is an 'S' at the end of your course code. if you're studying in the North American Spring, make sure there is an 'F'.

  • A 'W' at the end of a course code means the course is a full year course and most likely not available to semester-only students.

  • You will want to be registered for a total of 14-16 US credits so depending on the levels of your courses you will ultimately be taking between 3-5 courses (72-90 NQF).
