University of Cape Town

Univcapetown

Affectionately known as the Mother City, Cape Town was founded in 1652 and is South Africa’s oldest city. Cape Town is rated as one of the most beautiful cities in the world with a backdrop of flat-topped Table Mountain juxtaposed by the sweep of the Atlantic Ocean in the foreground. You can hike or take a cable-car ride up Table Mountain to enjoy the breathtaking view of the city and peninsula, take a ferry to the historic Robben Island, or visit the Cape of Good Hope. The University of Cape Town (UCT) is South Africa’s oldest university and one of the continent’s leading teaching and research institutions. The main teaching campus, known as Upper Campus is centered on UCT’s iconic Jameson Hall.  This breathtaking location looks out onto the city and up at Devil's Peak. Upper Campus is home to the majority of academic buildings and Interstudy's Cape Town office.  Stop in between classes to check your email, print a paper or just catch up with our friendly South African staff.

Program Info

    • Admission: Interstudy works on a rolling admission basis for spots on this program.  The sooner you apply, the sooner you'll know if you have a place.  Preferred deadlines are April 1st for Fall semester and October 1st for Spring semester.  Call for availability after these dates.
    • Requirements: You should have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher and be in your Junior or Senior year at the time of study. If you will be a Sophomore or have a GPA below a 3.0, you should contact an Interstudy adviser to discuss your options.
    • Housing: As an Interstudy student, you will live in a single room in 2-3 bedroom apartments.  You will share a kitchen and bathroom with other students on the program. Full degree South African students live in the housing complex as cultural mentors to help you get integrated quickly and show you the ropes. Click here to check out our housing
    • Excursions: To help you learn about Cape Town and South Africa, Interstudy includes excursions to local places of cultural and geographical significance.  From visiting Robben Island where Mandela was incarcerated to going on a safari, we help you get the most out of your experience.
    • Courses: Interstudy does not limit you to a specific academic focus.  You can take a mix of classes in departments ranging from engineering to gender studies.  A full load is generally 3 or 4 classes depending on the level of instruction. Courses are available in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, Law, Business and Sciences.  Your Interstudy adviser will help you pre-register for courses before you arrive and you will finalize your courses in Cape Town. This means that what you select now is not set in stone until the add/drop period is over. For more information on courses, click here
    • Volunteering: Learning doesn't just happen in the classroom!  Interstudy helps you find volunteer placements at various organizations around the city.  Previous students have worked in orphanages, in HIV/AIDS clinics and with community development organizations.
